"Libraries are much more than books"

 

Situated overlooking the harbour, the steps leading to the front entrance of the Tobermory Library, constructed of log & stone, provide a great area for visiting groups to be photographed.

The book drop is located at the rear entrance where a stroller/wheel-chair friendly ramp leads down from the back parking lot to either the back door, or around the west side of the building, and down to the Bay Street sidewalk. Once inside, note the stone fireplace, and 2 stone chimneys, centred in stone walls, and the huge timbers bracing the open ceiling.

A swag of Bruce County Tartan, purchased by the Friends’ group, hangs on one stone chimney. The Story of the Tartan, and the Bruce County Coat-of-Arms, sit on the mantel, and in the once open fire area, an electric heater emits warmth and adds ambience to the building. The red carpeting throughout the building sets off the red chesterfield, and matching cushions, centred in front of the fireplace.

Why not enjoy your cup of coffee, or snack, while seated on one of the outdoor benches; one  donated  by family members in memory of Clara & Barney Hopkins, two benches donated by the Friends of the Library, one of which is in memory of Jack Wellington, all located in the grassed area beside the library?

Library membership is issued no-charge to Bruce County residents; as a member of the Bruce County Public Library system, library card holders have the advantage of borrowing from any branch throughout the County - remember, that the branch you borrow from, is the branch you return your items to.

Not from the area? Visiting? The library offers a $5./month/family non-resident membership with one piece of identification.

We offer:

• Books, books and more books.
• Fiction and non-fiction, adult & juvenile - from our shelves, and the shelves of 17 other branches located throughout the County of Bruce.
• Reference material - encyclopedias, dictionaries, local history
• Inter-branch, and interlibrary loan - a valuable tool for patron requests
• Videos - includes a collection of approximately 80 videos on a rotating basis, and are loaned for a limited time. We also have approx. 30 donated videos available for loan.
• Photocopying
• Programming for children and adults
• Internet Access - $2. hr. One ID is required when completing the BCFL User Agreement Form prior to initial usage. DSL Internet Access with 4 public use computers.
• DVD’s
• CD’s
• Fax Service      $1.00 first page,   $0.50  additional pages
• Summer programs for children

BCPL has entered into an agreement with Criterion pictures, allowing the showing of movies throughout the County. The Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula has been generous in providing the library the use of the Tobermory Community Centre for showing movies e.g. Like Mike, Daddy Daycare, as they become available. Admission $2.

• fund raising with proceeds using for library improvement
• Friends’ activies & pictures now in binder form for public viewing
• items purchased for the library include shelving, photocopier, window blinds, program supplies and gifts for speakers, magazine subscriptions, fireplace insert & surround and other small items. -contact publishers for donations of children’s books, which are included in the Christmas Community bags given to children immediately following the Christmas parade.
